Haringey Council urged to suspend parking fees to boost local economy þ 07/04/09

Two wannabe MPs for Haringey have joined forces to demand that Haringey Council immediately drops parking charges across Haringey to help struggling businesses.

In a joint statement, Richard Merrin and Sean Sullivan, Conservative candidates for Hornsey and Wood Green and Tottenham respectively, said: "Local businesses are really struggling at the moment. People are, understandably, watching their pennies. Spending £2-3 just to do the weekly groceries turns people off from shopping locally in our High Streets and on our Broadways. Instead, they go to the out of area big stores, where parking is free, to the detriment of smaller shops - the lifeblood of our borough. Local businesses would really benefit if Haringey dropped parking charges and we strongly urge the council to implement this policy - at least until the recession ends".

According to the Forum of Private Business there are 200 shops a day closing as the recession bites
