Hinchcliffe and Revah comment on near-miss by-election win in Seven Sisters 23/01/09

In last week's Seven Sisters ward by-election, the Conservatives narrowly missed unseating Labour by just 64 votes--and the Lib Dems came a poor third. Conservative Chairman Justin Hinchcliffe said:

"In the wake of the Baby P scandal and the many other failures of this arrogant and complacent Labour council, it was so important that Labour be defeated this time.

Last time in Seven Sisters (2006), Conservatives came 2nd to Labour with the Lib Dems in 4th place--behind, even, the Greens. But, as usual, the Lib Dems spent more time attacking the Conservatives than Labour. They littered the whole ward with endless leaflets falsely claiming 'the Tories can't win here'. By confusing the electorate, the majority of whom were desperate for Labour to lose, these underhand tactics cheated the people of Haringey of seeing a well-deserved defeat for Labour.  In spite of this, however, the Conservatives still substantially increased their vote and are well-placed to take a seat here in Seven Sisters next time."

Conservative candidate Isaac Revah (pictured) added: "I am delighted and humbled that so many people put their faith in me.  Labour have lost the trust of a majority of the people of Seven Sisters, once one of their 'safest' wards. And the Lib Dems have peaked in Haringey. This is the third by-election in Tottenham where they have finished a poor third. I intend to carry on campaigning and helping the people of Seven  Sisters, even though there isn't going to be an election for another two years. A big 'Thank you' to the nearly 1,000 people who put their trust in me and braved freezing weather to come out and vote for me."
