Local Conservatives welcome plan for new crossing in White Hart Lane, but question need for one-way traffic and shared pavements 25/08/08

Justin Hinchcliffe, a White Hart resident and Conservative campaigner, has welcomed plans by Haringey Council to introduce a pedestrian crossing at the junction of the Roundway and Gospatrick Road. Tottenham Conservatives first called on the Council to install a crossing at the junction of the Great Cambridge Road (A10) and Roundway, just a few hundred yards along the road, back in 2001, with the support of the borough's Conservative councillors.

Said Justin Hinchcliffe: 'This much-needed crossing will really be welcomed by residents as it will massively improve the safety of local pedestrians.  The news is a common sense victory for local Conservatives and residents and it's better late than never. It's just a shame that it's taken Labour-run Haringey over eight years to act. They kept on passing the buck to Transport for London when they themselves could have acted.'

In addition, the Council is proposing to make Gospatrick Road one way to the west of the Roundway, with traffic flowing west except bikes which would still be able to turn into the Roundway from Gospatrick Road by means of a shared pavement with pedestrians. 'I have very strong reservations about this plan. I am not convinced that it is necessary and I think the proposal to allow cyclists and pedestrians to share the same pavement could be confusing and dangerous but, ultimately, this is a decision for Gospatrick residents and I strongly urge them, and Waltheof Gardens residents who be affected, to make their views known by contacting Haringey Council either by email, letter or phone.'
