Use 'Gummy Bins' and steam cleaners to end sticky problem of chewing gum on our pavements - says Tottenham Green's Dr. James Orpin 08/02/08

The state of the pavements around Seven Sisters station is a disgrace - according to a local Conservative campaigner who hopes to represent the area on Haringey Council in 2010, the date of the next council elections.

Commenting on the obscene amount of CHEWING GUM which is plastered across the pavements around the underground station, Dr. James Orpin, an NHS doctor and Conservative campaigner in the area, said:

"The state of the pavements around Seven Sisters tube station is appalling. Chewing gum is a headache for every local authority in the country, but it seems to be really out of control here in Haringey. What is the Council doing about it? Not much, it would seem. Haringey should be providing 'Gummy Bins' and using steam cleaning machines to remove the gum. It's time Haringey stamped out this sticky problem".

It is estimated that local councils spend £150m a year on removing chewing gum from the pavements. The cost of cleaning up just one packet of gum is reported to be £7.27
