Councillor in charge of Crime and Community Safety told to quit after murder silence 02/07/07

Following two horrific murders in Tottenham last week, local Conservatives are demanding to know why the Labour council and MP have still not acted to reassure the local community by calling a public meeting to allay fears and gather and share information.

Annaka Keniesha Pinto, 17, was shot dead at the Tottenham Swan pub and Elida Duba, 38, was stabbed to death at her home in Pulham Road.

Justin Hinchcliffe, Chairman of Tottenham Conservatives, has called on Cllr. Nilgun Canver, the Lead member for Crime and Community Safety, to quit her job. Said Justin:

"Within the last week we in Tottenham have witnessed two horrific murders on own doorstep, yet the Council's Lead member for Crime and Community Safety hasn't said anything let alone sought to allay the public's concerns. That isn't leadership. What is the point of Cllr. Canver? David Lammy, our MP, has also been conspicuously silent. Tottenham needs strong leaders who have a vision to make the area a safer and better place in which to live and work. Sadly, Labour's so-called 'leaders' just don't measure up."

ENDs.
