Voters send Haringey Lib Dems packing - Conservatives accuse Lib Dem Cllrs. as being "part-time" and "opportunists" 05/05/07

Two Haringey Lib Dem councillors, Ron Aitken (Crouch End) and Robert Gorrie (Hornsey), were humiliated when the duo stood for election to the Scottish Parliament after being beaten by Labour, the SNP and Conservatives. They averaged around just 6% of  the total votes cast.

Commenting on their return, Justin Hinchcliffe of Haringey Conservatives, said:

“It’s clear that, for them, Haringey is second best. They abandoned Haringey for Scotland, touted themselves to the Scottish electorate but the people of Scotland sent them packing. Haringey needs hard-working councillors who are capable of standing up to this dreadful Labour administration, not part-time councillors and opportunists.”

Meanwhile, another two local Lib Dem councillors, Cllr. Wayne Hoban (Alexandra) and Monica Whyte (Hornsey), are fighting it out, along with 19 other contestants, for plum jobs on the Greater London Authority (GLA). Although the party won no constituency seats at the last elections in 2004, they won five seats on the ‘top up’ system under proportional representation. Two vacancies have appeared and the two councillors are hoping to be placed high up – number 1 – 5 – on the List.

“It’s obvious that Haringey’s Lib Dem councillors continue to use the Council as a mere ‘stepping stone’ for higher office. Conservatives continue to be the only effective opposition in Haringey” , Justin added.
