Haringey Conservatives accuse Labour of "misleading" and "scaremongering" local press and residents 16/02/07

Haringey Conservatives were this week very saddened to see Labour press releases, sent to all newspapers in Haringey, which they claim were misleadingand scaremongering.

Conservative Members on the Greater London Authority (GLA) reaffirmed their pledge to introduce a dedicated school bus system across London that would provide a free, safe and effective way of transporting children to and from school whilst freeing up capacity on bus routes for fare paying passengers.

Supporting the pledge, Justin Hinchcliffe of Haringey Conservatives, commented:

"The idea that we want to see schoolchildren walking to and from school in the cold and dark, as Labour in Haringey is implying, is false and sheer scaremongering.

Conservatives want to see a school bus service which would help to stamp out increasing levels of anti-social behaviour, reduce truancy, stop over-eighteens from abusing the system and allow fare-paying passengers seats!

"Money saved by scrapping the Mayor's own newspaper would have been diverted into paying for extra CCTV on all overground trains, 18 additional British Transport Police across Haringey and 582 extra police for other London boroughs and a small cut for the average band D Council Tax precept.

"When voting on the component parts of the budget (MPA, LFEPA, LDA and TfL) every member from each party voted to support the Metropolitan Police Authority's budget, but in an attempt to change the Mayor's overall budget increase of 5.3% (excluding the Olympics precept) Assembly Members had to vote against the overall budget. They could not 'pick and choose'."
