A Haringey Conservative has slammed the Mayor of London for yet another above inflation rise in transport costs in the capital. The rises will hit residents, visitors and those on low-incomes who cannot afford to pay in advance for their travel.
"Ken Livingstone seems determined to punish Haringey's residents for living in the capital, tourists for wishing to visit it and those on low-incomes who simply cannot afford to pay in advance for their travel" said Justin Hinchcliffe, the Chairman of Tottenham Conservatives.
He added, "Those people paying cash fares, which includes most visitors, will see a hike of 33% for both tube and bus journeys to and from Haringey.
The Oyster card continues to be the cheapest way of travelling and users will only see a rise if they make off-peak bus journeys. But at 25%, this rise is still way above the rate of inflation.
These rises will hit people on low-incomes and will prove a real turn off for tourists and visitors. London continues to be the most expensive capital city to travel around in the world and the cash single fare on the tube is more than two and a half times the next highest (Tokyo)."
