Lib Dems vote Labour, yet again! 08/12/06

Despite being elected on a platform of being a ‘Strong Opposition’  to Labour in Haringey the Lib Dems voted today for more power to be given to the Labour Deputy Leader of Haringey Council.

In a vote to appoint a Deputy Chairman to London TravelWatch, which is supposed to be the Independent voice for commuters in London , the Lib Dems on the GLA voted for the appointment of the Labour Deputy Leader of Haringey – Cllr Lorna Reith.

London TravelWatch is funded by the GLA and is intended to be the ‘independent' commuters’ rights body and to acts an arbiter in disputes between individuals and transport or local authorities. In the vote at the GLA, Cllr Reith was supported by two Labour GLA members, the One London (elected as a UKIP) member and the Lib Dem. The two Conservative members strongly opposed this appointment.

Haringey Conservatives are appalled that once more the Lib Dems have failed in their promise to the people who voted for them by supporting Labour.

Local Conservative spokesman, David Douglas said:

“The one thing that Haringey residents know is the Haringey Labour Party is hardly capable of running Haringey – let alone standing up for commuters on a London wide basis.

“Many Haringey residents voted Lib Dem to get rid of Labour.  They must be furious that Lib Dem politicians are now giving more power to Haringey Labour councillors. So much for opposing Blair and Labour.

“Despite being Chaired by a non Party political Chairman – Brian Cooke – this appointment must deeply damage the Independence of this body.”
