Go green and do away with your staff car parks, Conservatives tell Haringey Council 05/10/06

Following the Conservative Party conference in Bournemouth where Leader David Cameron put climate change at the front of the  political agenda, local Conservatives are now calling on Haringey Council to encourage the use of public transport and cycling by closing its staff car parks and only allowing spaces for disabled drivers in a bid to cut pollution levels.

In a plea to Labour’s Council Leader, Cllr George Meehan, Justin  Hinchcliffe, Chairman of Tottenham Conservatives, cited the Civic Centre and Riverside House in Wood Green as examples of why the  Council shouldn’t cater for cars.

Justin explained: “I am not anti-car but I believe that car use should be restricted for essential  journeys. Both the Civic Centre and Riverside House are well served  by public transport – being within a stone’s throw from Wood Green tube station and off busy bus routes. Car use must be discouraged under these circumstances and we call on the Council to close all of its staff car parks. Climate Change is the biggest threat to the planet and if we should all do our bit to slow it down.  Conservatives want to see more people using alternatives to the car, support renewable energy and are committed to a greener and cleaner borough. If Haringey is serious about wanting to reduce  pollution levels and to encourage public transport then they should lead by example and do away with their staff car parks.”
