Local Conservatives back climate change action 19/09/06

Friends of the Earth and the Conservatives are calling on the Government to adopt binding targets for reducing carbon emissions in the UK.

Justin Hinchcliffe, Chairman of Tottenham Conservatives, said: "We are pressing the Government to include a Climate Change Bill in the Queens Speech. The Government is always quick to tell local councils what to do to improve the environment; now, it's time they acted."

A spokesman for Friends of the Earth said: "We need to persuade Mr Blair that we need legally binding targets to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. This will give us the chance to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. It will commit the UK to the level of action thats needed. And it will also inspire other countries to follow suit."
