Residents pay almost £¾ million to bring recycling under council control 23/08/06

On Monday night, the Overview and Scrutiny committee voted to uphold the Executive's decision to bring recycling services back in-house. This will cost residents an estimated £721,000.

The decision means that residents will have to pay around £201,000 extra in pensions contributions, and at this stage it is unclear as to whether this is a one off payment or per annum. They will also loose the CRED grant of £520,000 that EWS had secured.

Nicola Bates, of Haringey Conservatives, said:

“Residents are going to suffer twice this year. The first with the rubbish strike, which still hasn’t finished being cleared up. Secondly by the inevitable delays that will be caused by bringing our recycling in-house. Importantly we will also lose a half million pound grant for doorstep recycling, with no certainty that this will be replaced”.

Conservatives are questioning why Haringey have rushed the decision and why they have been unwilling to put this contract out for a genuine tender process.

ENDs.
