Haringey rubbish strike - Conservatives demand answers 10/08/06

As uncollected rubbish continues to pile up across the Borough, local Conservatives have written to the Council Leader demanding answers to five urgent questions.  They have called on the Council to write to local residents to set out exactly what contingency plans are in place.  Conservatives are also demanding an emergency full Council meeting to answer residents’ concerns.

Toby Boutle, of Haringey Conservatives, said:

‘The Council says this is matter for the contractor to resolve with its staff.  Its attitude is that this strike is none of its business.  But as rubbish piles up in this hot weather, the Council needs to take urgent action.  It should take an active role in resolving the dispute.

‘With no end to this dispute in sight, the Council should tell us exactly what contingency plans are in place.  As ever, Haringey is failing to let local residents know what is going on.

‘The Council says that there are contingency plans in place.  But in many parts of the Borough, there is no sign of any residential rubbish collection whatever.’

Toby Boutle has written to the Council Leader, Cllr George Mehan, demanding urgent answers to these questions:

  1. What exactly are the contingency plans which are supposedly in place – and why do they not appear to be having any effect?
  2. Will the Council write forthwith directly to all local residents, setting out in detail what service levels they can expect to receive if this strike continues?
  3. Does the Council’s service contract with Haringey Accord provide for any financial penalties in the event of a failure to provide proper services?  Does that apply in the event of strike action?
  4. Will the Council rebate hard-pressed Council Tax payers with any financial compensation which it receives from Haringey Accord?
  5. Is the Council taking any active steps to ensure a swift resolution of this dispute?
