Government promises are not worth the identity paper that they are written on 14/02/06

Tottenham Conservatives accused the Government of 'broken promises' as they joined hundreds of activists to protest against ID cards on Monday.

The protest came as MPs voted to remove safeguards introduced into the ID cards bill by the House of Lords. The vote means the cards will be compulsory for anyone who applies for a passport from 2008.

Chairman and Council Candidate for White Hart Lane Justin Hinchcliffe said: "The Government is breaking a clear manifesto commitment. They promised that ID cards would only be voluntary, but now they're being forced on anyone getting a passport. This vote shows that Labour's promises aren't worth the identity paper they're written on!"
