According to a leading political website, www.electoralcalculus.co.uk, the Liberal Democrats would lose Hornsey and Wood Green to Labour and the Conservatives would overtake the LibDems in Tottenham if an election were now to be called. Labours vote would be largely unchanged but there would be a sizable swing from the LibDems to the Conservatives.
Local Conservatives have welcomed the predictions, which are based on current voting intentions.
Spokesman Justin Hinchcliffe commented:
It is clear that local residents who flirted with the Liberal Democrats are now returning to David Camerons liberal Conservative Party. The Conservative Party is a voice for change, optimism and hope. We will be positive, constructive and reasonable when holding the Government to account, and we will be thoughtful, open-minded and energetic in developing the ideas and policies we need to meet the long-term challenges Haringey faces.
David Camerons election as Leader has resulted in many people switching from Charles Kennedys LibDems to the Conservatives. Local Tories are confident of successes in Mays council elections for Haringey Council.
