Car break-ins become a risk-free crime as detection rate falls to 1 in 100 05/08/05

Conservatives today have highlighted the futility of reporting vehicle crime in Haringey following the release of Home Office figures showing that only 1 in 100 car break-ins reported to the police results in the culprit(s) being apprehended. This ‘detection rate’ has fallen from 5 in 100 in 2003-04.

Commenting on the statistics, Peter Forrest, spokesman for Haringey Conservatives, said:

“Now is not the time to criticise the police who are hard pressed and doing a superb job in the aftermath of the 7/7 and 21/7 bombings. But these numbers do show the gulf between performance and public expectation and the degree to which Government claims on reducing crime will not be shared by most ordinary members of the public.”
