William MacDougall instructs MP Lammy to impeach Blair in tomorrow\'s vote 23/11/04

MacDougall backs first impeachment bid since time of the Battle of Trafalgar

William MacDougall, Conservative Parliamentary candidate for Tottenham, has joined calls for a debate in the Commons on the Prime Minister’s gross misconduct in misleading Parliament and the public into the Iraq War. He has, in so doing, given Tottenham’s David Lammy one last chance to prove that he’s not a “Blair Yes-Man”. MacDougall opposed the invasion of Iraq from Day One, while Lammy has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Prime Minister's actions.

William MacDougall believes that Mr. Blair's misleading of Parliament and the country has undermined the fundamental principle of parliamentary democracy which is that the government must tell the truth to Members of Parliament who inturn represent the people.

A cross-party group of MPs calling for impeachment is united in its determination to preserve constitutional government in Britain. They believe that the repeated, organised deceit that led the UK into the Iraq War is there for all to see and that the constitutional conventions of cabinet government and ministerial accountability have failed.

This Prime Minister has himself sacked two Ministers for breaking the constitutional convention of not misleading parliament. By his own standards he should have resigned months ago. A debate on the commencement of impeachment proceedings is the remaining constitutional way forward.

Speaking from Tottenham, MacDougall said:

"This is a Prime Minister who boasts a desire to promote law and order, yet defies international law and starts illegal wars.

Our MPs must make a stand or watch the democracy that has been fought for so often against foreign enemies subverted from within. The rules of constitutional conduct have been brushed aside. The cabinet table has seen replaced by the TV sofa, cabinet minutes withy e-mails and the facts replaced with "belief".

This is David Lammy's last chance to prove that he has listened to his constituents and is not a "Blair Yes-Man". Today we make a stand for parliamentary democracy. We ask our parliamentarians and the people of the Tottenham to support the restoration of accountability in government and Parliament".
