Next-door Islington dubbed "loony" by William MacDougall 06/11/04

Neighbouring Islington Council has this week been branded "loony" by William MacDougall, the Conservatives' candidate for Tottenham. The Liberal Democrat-run council has provoked outrage by suggesting that one of its schools, which has just received £2 million in sponsorship from the Church of England, drop the word "Saint" from its name for fear of causing offence to other religions, despite Christians, Jews and Muslims supporting the status quo.

St. Mary Magdalene Church of England Primary School, which has served the community since 1710, is the subject of a consultation exercise over its name as the school expands into a "City Academy" in 2007.

William MacDougall, Parliamentary Candidate for Tottenham commented:

"A vote for the LibDems is not just a wasted vote, it's a dangerous one. The LibDems are far more politically correct than Labour. Whilst most people want action to improve schools and hospitals, the LibDems focus on trivial and politically correct matters as we are now witnessing in Islington. Under the LibDems, Islington Council has reverted backed to its Loony Left roots.

"The Conservatives support faith-based schools, want good schools to expend and set all schools free from ever-increasing government paperwork. We will also weed out disruptive children who cause havoc in the classrooms. That's what a political party serious about entering government should be talking about, not politically-correct claptrap designed to appease the Chattering Classes."
