The man aiming to be Tottenham's next MP has described the Prime Minister`s
latest promise to deport more failed asylum seekers as "Another of Tony`s
phoneys!"
Mr. Blair this week opened a new Asylum Centre, designed to hold 326 men
appealing against deportation, near Heathrow. That centre cost 50 million
pounds - which is enough to keep the same number of people at the Ritz for
a year or to build three Olympic-standard training pools in the South East
of England. The luxury centre is equipped with colour televisions in every
bedroom, a cinema, gym, shop, library and sports hall!
Speaking from Bruce Grove, William MacDougall, Conservative Parliamentary
Candidate for Tottenham, said:
"We know that at least a quarter of a million failed asylum seekers remain
illegally in Britain, and far too many of them in Tottenham. We know that
the asylum and immigration system is costing British taxpayers 5 million
every day of the year.
In 2001 Blair promised to deport 30,000 failed asylum seekers. That promise
was quietly dropped and we now face fiddled figures, promising to curb the
number of illegal asylum seekers while at the same time inviting the same
number of people to enter the country as bona fide immigrants. Under Labour
the number of people entering the UK to settle every year is greater than
the entire population of Haringey!
And yet, while all this is going on, those with a genuine claim, those seeking naturalisation and those waiting for claims to be processed under the government`s amnesty, people who are working legally, contributing to the economy and paying taxes, cannot get their cases processed.
MPs are now receiving far too many letters from solicitors (usually paid for by Legal Aid) requesting help to either prevent cases of deportation where appeals have been exhausted or asking for parliamentary assistance because of delays or lost paperwork. I do not blame the hard-pressed Civil Service: the system that Blair and Blunkett have allowed to develop is quite literally sinking under a sea of paperwork and bureaucracy. Those are the issues that the Prime Minister ought now to be addressing."
