Lammy's solution to the NHS crisis - end legal aid for law suits 09/08/04

Conservatives were shocked to learn of David Lammy's solution to the NHS Crisis: end legal aid for medical law suits.  The Labour MP for Tottenham, as the Legal Aid Minister, has proposed that legal aid for medical claims would be available only during the investigative phase, not for the trial.

Lammy's Conservative challenger William MacDougall said:

"Not only is Labour doing little to improve NHS service, they are now removing legal aid for
those forced to sue for compensation for NHS failures.  Fighting for a fair deal will no longer be free at the point of use.  The working people of Tottenham will feel betrayed by their MP's action."

MacDougall continued,

"The legal aid bill is huge, but at least for medical law suits, the solution is to improve the NHS through the provision of genuine patient choice; the Government should treat the causes of medical failure rather than pricing the poor out of seeking compensation."
