Criminals going unpunished across Haringey: Conservative will put more police on Tottenham streets 06/08/04

"8 out of 9 muggers and 6 out of 7 burglars are escaping justice in Haringey. And it's getting worse!" said William MacDougall, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Tottenham, having analysed recently published Home Office crime statistics.  The figures show that the detection rate for burglary fell from 16% in 02/03 to only 15% last year, while the detection rate for muggings fell from 17% to a mere 11%.

MacDougall continued, "we already knew that many types of violent crime are rising. But worse, even fewer criminals are being punished for those crimes. More muggers and burglars are getting away scot-free with their actions, and their victims are not seeing proper justice.

"Our police officers in Tottenham are working hard, but are being dragged down by Whitehall bureaucracy that prevents them from patrolling the streets and catching criminals. This is why Conservatives want to see a greater emphasis on neighbourhood policing and a greater say for local people on how police forces are run, backed up by more money for an extra 8,539 police officers across London."
