Halve legal limit to 12 weeks for abortion on demand, William urges Lammy 06/07/04

A baby at 20 weeks

David Lammy, MP, is being urged by his Conservative challenger to support calls for the legal limit for terminations of social abortions to be halved to 12 weeks, instead of the current 24 weeks.

William MacDougall, Conservative Parliamentary candidate for Tottenham and a member of Right to Life, the pro-life organisation, said:

David Steel, the architect of Britains abortion law, has come out as a supporter for a new maximum age of 12 weeks. As Tottenhams MP, I would vote to lower the maximum abortion limit from 24 weeks to 12. I urge David Lammy to support these calls. Its both unbelievable and sad that St. Anns Hospital is terminating pregnancies at 22 weeks, whilst North Middlesex Hospital has incubation units for babies aged 20 weeks. Abortion on demand should be limited as in many other European countries to 12 weeks and thereafter allowed only on medical grounds.
