How Labour is fiddling the new-build housing figures 30/05/04

In a press statement released today, local Conservatives have attacked John
Prescott claim's that Labour is exceeding its brown field targets with over
60% of development now being on brown field sites.

Conservatives say that Labour’s fiddled figures include leafy back gardens
within their definition of “brownfield sites”. This Bogus Brownfield
Development could account for a substantial proportion of Labour’s claimed
brownfield development in suburban areas and Labour intends to go on
targeting Britain’s back gardens: the Government is so impressed with a
recent academic study arguing that cramming high density new housing into
suburban back-gardens is the solution to our problems, that it is giving
£1,750,000 of public money to its author to develop these proposals.

Commenting on the reports, Peter Forrest, Conservtive GLA Candidate for
Enfield-Haringey said:

"No-one believes a word Labour says any more more. The housing numbers are
always fiddled to suit Labour's argument whatever local people think.

Furthermore, I have not met any person on the doorstep who does not think
that Labour's & Livingstone's expansionist and high-rise housing plans for
London in general, and our part of London in particular, are little short of
bonkers".
