Lammy dubbed 'Blair yes-man' over massive u-turn 19/04/04

William MacDougall, the Conservative candidate for Tottenham, has welcomed news that the Labour government is set to perform a massive u-turn and hold a referendum on the proposed European Constitution.

William MacDougall told us: "David Lammy is set to follow in the footsteps of Tony Blair, his Lord and Master, and support a referendum on the European Constitution. This is a remarkable u-turn by Lammy, who has been touring radio and TV studios to argue the case against letting the people decide. All this proves is that Lammy is the ultimate 'Blair yes-man'. If Blair were to climb to the top of Canary Wharf and jump off, Lammy would follow".

However, local Conservatives have welcomed the referendum and have pledged to campaign for a 'no' vote.

"We have consistently argued that Blair should trust the people of Britain and call a referendum. The draft Constitution is badly drafted and far too long, and, worse, it gives yet more power to Brussels, when we should be shifting it back to Britain.  Conservatives want to be in Europe, not run by Europe - so we'll support the 'no' campaign,” adds Mr. MacDougall.
