William MacDougall flies to the defence of local pigeons 12/04/04

William MacDougall, the Conservatives' new Parliamentary spokesman for Tottenham, has wasted no time in attacking Labour-run Haringey over its attempt the kill off the pigeons in our very own 'Trafalgar Square' - Ducketts Common.

For years several old ladies and mums with children alike have been feeding their feathered friends on the Common, but Haringey Council is using an obscure bye-law to prevent the birds from being fed.

MacDougall said:

"Haringey Council says that the feeding of the pigeons is causing rats to visit the area. Haringey's own failure to sweep the streets and provide litter bins is the cause of the rats, not the pigeons who leave the floor spotless after their meal time.

I am not a major fan of pigeons, but I do think the pigeons on Ducketts Common are harmless and provide enjoyment to many local people. Local people don't want Haringey to starve them to death. I urge the Council to re-consider its policy towards pigeon feeding".
