Tottenham Conservatives lend support to local Turkish Community, Haringey Peace Alliance and Harringay Traders' Association 31/03/04

Tottenham Conservatives enjoyed tucking in to a feast of mediterranean food provided by the Green Lanes Traders' Association (GLTA) for the Unity Day celebration held at the Turkish Cypriot centre in Green Lanes on Sunday.

Lydia Rivlin, Justin Hinchcliffe and Pat Salim watched the display of Turkish dancing and rap performed by children from the Harringay community, and meet up with old friends, colleagues and political rivals across the range of the political spectrum.

Said Lydia Rivlin, Chairman of Tottenham Conservatives:

"On a personal level, we get along quite well. And this was a day to put aside political issues and celebrate the unity that the Traders' Association work so hard to promote.  I was sorry to see Taki Suleiman was not there as this was a rare opportunity for us to meet with a smile because usually I am lobbing awkward questions at him.  However, I did get a chance to pass a few friendly words with Cllr Nilgun Canver.  I have to thank the GLTA for the opportunity they gave us to remember that although we come at problems from different angles, we are-- after all-- human beings with the same needs and aspirations."

After that, the group went on to the Turkish Cultural event being held at the Tottenham Green Leisure Centre where they were met by an organiser, Erdogan Dervish, who is also a Tottenham Conservative activist.

"We were all bowled over by the professionalism of the performers, some of whom were very young children indeed," said Justin Hinchcliffe, Deputy Chairman (Social and Media).  "The production standards were very high and the performances were flawless.  Every Turkish school in the area was represented, even from south London, and they were all brilliant. They obviously put an enormous amount of work into the project.  I understand that they had all the costumes made in Turkey so they were really authentic and full of colour and sparkle."
