Tottenham Conservatives have welcomed plans to make immigrants take part in special language and citizenship classes before being declared British.
Home Secretary David Blunkett said the scheme - involving an examination for those foreigners wanting to become British citizens and obtain the right to vote - would help immigrants settle here more effectively and responsibly.
And Justin Hinchcliffe, Deputy Chairman of Tottenham Conservatives, agreed. He said that while the Conservative Party would study the plans carefully, "we support the idea of citizenship tests in principle".
Mr Hinchcliffe explained: "It is absolutely essential that people who wish to become British citizens have an understanding of our language, customs, history and culture. They should not be allowed full British citizenship until they have passed an exam showing they have basic knowledge in all these areas."
