Crime explosion on London's Tube/Overground

Crime explosion on Tube/Overground networks

Haringey  Conservatives today expressed concern at new figures published by the British Transport Police showing that public disorder offences have soared by 72% across London's Tube/overground rail network in the last year. Theft of passenger property which accounts for nearly two-thirds of all reported crime leapt by 50%. Instances of criminal damage rose by 28%.

The year-on-year increases in public disorder offences and in criminal damage were the highest in the UK.

Peter Forrest, Conservative GLA Candidate for Enfield-Haringey said:

“We already knew that the state of public transport has worsened under this Government, despite ever rising taxes.Yet not only have passengers faced worse service, new official figures reveal that passengers are at a greater risk of being a victim of crime than ever before.

Rising crime on London's Tube and overground rail network affects us all. The Government is not going to reduce congestion on our roads if travellers are scared of being attacked or robbed when using public transport.

Government proposals to give certain railway staff limited police powers are not enough. What people want to see is more uniformed police officers in trains and on platforms.”
