Tory Enfield shows the way - Haringey lags behind (again)

Council Tax

Peter Forrest, Conservative GLA Candidate for Enfield-Haringey, today highlighted new statistics published by the Government showing the percentage of council tax collected by each council in England. Conservative controlled Enfield Council gathered 94.6% of the total it should be collecting over the last year, compared to 92.5% in Labour controlled Haringey and 88.4% in Lib-Dem controlled Islington. Astoundingly, the collection rate in Lib-Dem Islington actually nose-dived by 3.1% over the previous year and was the 3rd lowest in England!

The collection figures also showed that Conservative controlled Councils are the best in the country.

Peter Forrest said:

We already know that Labour and Liberal Democrat councils have the highest council taxes in the country now we can see why. Council Tax collection rates in Labour Haringey are poor and in Lib-Dem Islington poor and getting worse. Astoundingly for a Party which aspires to take over Haringey, the Lib-Dems Council Tax collection rate in Islington has fallen to the 3rd worst in England.

Notes to Editors

Council tax collection rates for local councils in England were published on 26 June 2003.

The chart below lists the average overall collection rate, according to the Party control of the council (based on separate data and analysis of the ODPM data). This shows Conservative councils are more efficient at collecting council tax, helping keep council tax down for everyone else.

Party Control of Council

Average collection rate

Conservative

97.70%

LibDem

96.80%

Labour

95.30%

In 2003-04, on average across different tiers, Conservative councils charge an average of £81 less on Band D council tax bills than Labour-run councils, and a hundred pounds less than LibDem councils.
