Conservatives tell Haringey to 'come clean' over loans

Haringey Conservatives have written to Haringey's Chief Executive, David Warwick, calling on him to 'come clean' over the problem of non-repayment by its own staff of money owed to the Council.

The call follows the revelation in papers to the Council Executive [11 March 2003] that the Council is having to beef up its internal disciplinary procedures so that action can be more widely taken against members of staff who persistently owe the Council money.

Conservatives have called for the release of information on the total amount of money owed, the numbers and grades of staff involved, the reason(s) money is being owed and on what terms any loans were made, and why recovery of outstanding monies has proven so problematical that the Council's disciplinary code needs to be strengthened.

Said Peter Forrest, Enfield-Haringey GLA Candidate:

"Conservatives are calling on the Council to come clean over these un-repaid monies.

The Council is heavily in debt and all outstanding monies increase interest charges and thus help add to the Council Tax burden.

It is surely a worrying sign when the Council is having to beef up its internal disciplinary code to tackle recalcitrant staff who owe it money!".
